MBDA and WITU Advance Low-Cost Counter-Mass Interceptor for Drone and Missile Threats

MBDA and Poland’s Military Institute of Weapons Technology (WITU) are joining forces to develop the Counter Mass Interceptor (CMI), a low-cost, high-volume interceptor designed to address the growing challenge of mass attacks involving one-way attack drones, ISR drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
The initiative reflects a broader shift in air-defense engineering: developing interceptors that can be produced and deployed at scale without creating the cost imbalance that has increasingly favored relatively inexpensive drones over traditional missile defenses.
A Supersonic Interceptor Designed for Mass Threats
First unveiled by MBDA at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2026, CMI is a supersonic missile designed to engage targets at ranges and altitudes exceeding 6 kilometers.
The system incorporates field-proven technologies from both MBDA and WITU. The two organizations are now working to accelerate development and testing, with an initial CMI firing campaign targeted for 2027.
The program comes as European militaries increasingly confront the operational and economic challenge posed by large numbers of low-cost aerial threats. Traditional air-defense architectures can face unfavorable economics when expensive interceptors are used against comparatively inexpensive drones.
CMI is intended to help close that gap by combining a missile architecture suitable for high-volume production with a capable seeker and technologies already demonstrated by the two organizations.
Seeker Trials Clear the Way for Prototype Integration
In September 2026, MBDA and WITU completed a series of field trials at a test range in Poland to assess the performance of CMI’s seeker.
The trials covered multiple operational scenarios and included several representative drone target types. According to the companies, the successful test campaign enables the partnership to move into the joint integration of the seeker with a WITU-designed prototype missile.
That step represents an important transition from technology demonstration toward a more integrated CMI prototype.
Building a Polish-Sovereign Missile Capability
The CMI effort is supported by a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MBDA and WITU, signed at MSPO 2026.
The agreement establishes cooperation on missile research and builds on UK-Polish defense cooperation supported by the Northolt Treaty. The partnership is intended to deliver a fully Polish sovereign missile solution for Poland, while also contributing a timely, lower-cost European capability for allied armed forces.
For Poland, the approach offers an opportunity to strengthen domestic missile-development expertise while leveraging MBDA's experience and established technologies. For MBDA, it further expands an industrial and technological relationship with a country investing heavily in layered air defense.
Chris Allam, UK Managing Director of MBDA, said the cooperation demonstrates the company's commitment to Poland and builds on its support for the country's layered air-defense capabilities, including deliveries of PILICA+ and technology transfer associated with NAREW.
WITU CEO Col. Paweł Sweklej, PhD, said the partnership combines a fully Polish missile design with a state-of-the-art seeker and will help embed Polish technologies into European missile solutions.
The CMI program also adds to the organizations' existing cooperation on HYDIS, reinforcing a broader industrial relationship between Poland and MBDA around next-generation missile technologies.
Why CMI Matters
The economics of air defense are becoming as important as interceptor performance. The rapid proliferation of inexpensive drones has created a battlefield where an attacker can potentially launch large numbers of relatively cheap systems against defenses that rely on significantly more expensive interceptors.
That dynamic is driving demand for affordable, scalable, and technologically credible counter-mass solutions.
CMI is being developed against that backdrop. Its planned high-volume approach, supersonic performance, and use of established technologies could position the system as an additional layer for European air-defense architectures facing increasingly complex and saturated attack scenarios.
The next major milestone will be the planned 2027 firing campaign, which should provide a clearer indication of how the CMI concept performs as an integrated missile system.
