Astranis Launches Perceptor to Bring Space Domain Awareness to GEO

Astranis is expanding beyond satellite connectivity with Perceptor, a new space domain awareness and maneuverability platform designed to help protect critical infrastructure in geosynchronous orbit and other strategic high orbits.

Space is becoming an increasingly contested operational domain, and the strategic importance of GEO is making it a growing focus for national security.

Satellites operating in geosynchronous orbit support communications, intelligence, and other critical infrastructure, but they also face an increasingly complex threat environment. Spacecraft capable of approaching, inspecting, and potentially interfering with other satellites are changing the security calculus in higher orbits.

Against this backdrop, Astranis has announced Perceptor, a new capability designed to provide space domain awareness, inspection, and maneuverability in GEO and other high orbits.

The launch marks a significant expansion of Astranis' business beyond connectivity, positioning the company as a provider of multi-mission space infrastructure for both commercial and national security applications.

Bringing More Eyes, and More Mobility to GEO

Astranis argues that critical gaps remain in the ability to detect and respond to emerging threats in strategic higher orbits.

What we found is our means to detect and respond to emerging threats to this infrastructure are sorely lacking," said John Gedmark, CEO and co-founder of Astranis. "There are blind spots that will be used against us if not eliminated. With Perceptor, we're meeting the increasing demand for security in GEO with our proven on-orbit platform and ability to produce at scale."

Perceptor is designed around four core capabilities:

Observe and inspect. An onboard sensor suite allows the spacecraft to assess objects and activity in orbit. Multi-angle flybys can provide greater insight into the capabilities and behavior of other spacecraft, support anomaly investigations on friendly satellites, and improve situational awareness in an environment where visibility has historically been limited.

Maneuver across GEO. Perceptor is designed to respond to nearby activity in real time while using electric propulsion to travel across the GEO arc. According to Astranis, the spacecraft can reposition dozens of times throughout its mission lifetime, providing substantially greater operational flexibility.

Enable swarm tactics. A proliferated spacecraft architecture creates new possibilities for responding to attempts at evasion. Rather than relying on a small number of highly capable assets, multiple spacecraft can be deployed and coordinated to provide coverage and respond to changing mission requirements.

Scale quickly. Perceptor leverages Astranis' flight-proven MicroGEO platform and is designed for scalable production. The company says the spacecraft can be manufactured on the same production line as its existing satellites, potentially shortening the path from mission requirement to deployment.

A New Role for Proliferated GEO

At the heart of Perceptor is Astranis' broader proposition around proliferated GEO.

The company believes a larger number of maneuverable spacecraft operating across strategic orbits could provide capabilities that are difficult to achieve through traditional architectures. For national security users, that could mean more persistent awareness, greater maneuverability, and additional options for responding to activity around critical satellites.

Perceptor is being developed for both commercial and national security missions, with applications spanning GEO and other high orbits.

The platform also builds on an existing operational foundation. Astranis says five MicroGEO satellites are already on orbit, giving Perceptor a flight-proven hardware heritage rather than relying entirely on a new spacecraft architecture.

Astranis Moves Further Into Space Security

The introduction of Perceptor signals a broader strategic direction for Astranis.

The company initially built its position around compact GEO satellites and satellite connectivity. With Perceptor, Astranis is extending that platform into an increasingly important part of the space infrastructure market: understanding what is happening around critical satellites, and having the ability to move when necessary.

As competition in higher orbits intensifies, the ability to observe, maneuver, and operate at scale could become as important as simply maintaining a satellite in its assigned orbital position.

For governments and commercial operators increasingly concerned about the security and resilience of GEO infrastructure, Astranis is now positioning its MicroGEO platform as more than a connectivity asset. With Perceptor, it is becoming part of a broader vision for mobile, proliferated, and security-focused infrastructure in strategic orbits.
