The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has awarded three new Radar Commercial Augmentation (RCA) contracts, marking another major milestone in the agency's strategy to integrate commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capabilities into U.S. intelligence and national security operations.
The contracts were awarded to Capella Space, ICEYE US, and Umbra Lab, strengthening the NRO's partnership with the commercial space industry while expanding the Intelligence Community's ability to deliver persistent, all-weather Earth observation capabilities.
Unlike traditional optical satellites, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can capture high-resolution imagery regardless of cloud cover, darkness, or adverse weather conditions. These capabilities are becoming increasingly critical for modern intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), disaster response, humanitarian assistance, and global monitoring missions.
Building a More Resilient Intelligence Architecture
The new RCA contracts are designed to operationalize commercial radar capabilities alongside the NRO's national reconnaissance systems, creating a more resilient, flexible, and responsive overhead intelligence architecture.

The RCA awards build upon the NRO's Commercial Radar Capabilities (CRC) initiative, launched in January 2022 to evaluate the maturity of commercial SAR providers.
Over three phases, participating companies underwent rigorous assessments that included:
Modeling and simulation exercises
Operational mission analysis
On-orbit performance demonstrations
The successful completion of these evaluations positioned Capella Space, ICEYE US, and Umbra Lab to receive operational RCA contracts.

Managed by the NRO's Commercial Systems Program Office, the Radar Commercial Augmentation program provides reliable day, night, and all-weather imaging that supports a broad spectrum of government missions.
