As competition in orbit intensifies, military space operators must be prepared to make faster, smarter decisions in increasingly complex environments. To strengthen that capability, Slingshot Aerospace has been awarded a $69.2 million U.S. Space Force contract to deliver next-generation AI-powered mission rehearsal and operational training for Guardians responsible for protecting U.S. and allied space assets.
The 4.5-year award, issued under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III contract as part of the Operational Test and Training Infrastructure (OTTI) program, marks the largest government contract in Slingshot Aerospace's history. It expands on the company's earlier STRATFI initiative, which focused on developing a Digital Space Twin to replicate the operational space environment for advanced training and analysis.
AI at the Center of Future Space Warfare
The newly announced program, known as MENTAT, is designed to help the U.S. Space Force accelerate its adoption of artificial intelligence across operational planning and mission readiness.
Named after the analytical strategists from the science fiction universe Dune, MENTAT leverages AI to create highly realistic training environments where Guardians can rehearse complex space defense missions, evaluate multiple operational strategies, and strengthen decision-making before facing real-world threats.
As orbital operations become more contested, operators must respond to cyber threats, electronic warfare, suspicious satellite maneuvers, and rapidly evolving space activities with greater speed and precision. MENTAT aims to prepare mission teams for exactly these challenges.
TALOS Brings AI-Driven Mission Rehearsal to Guardians
Powering the MENTAT environment is TALOS, Slingshot Aerospace's AI-enabled operational training and strategy platform.
TALOS simulates realistic spacecraft behavior, analyzes large volumes of orbital and mission data, generates strategic response options, and supports continuous mission rehearsal across dynamic scenarios. Instead of relying solely on periodic large-scale exercises, Guardians will be able to practice complex operational decisions within AI-generated environments that closely resemble real missions.
The platform is intended to improve operators' ability to:
Detect abnormal spacecraft behavior
Assess potential adversary intent
Coordinate responses across mission teams
Maintain decision superiority during contested space operations
From Occasional Exercises to Continuous Readiness
Traditionally, advanced space operations training has largely been limited to scheduled exercises and dedicated training events.
MENTAT introduces a more flexible approach by allowing Guardians to access AI-powered training directly from their everyday operational workstations. This enables continuous mission rehearsal throughout normal operations rather than restricting readiness activities to infrequent exercises.
The shift reflects a broader evolution in military training, where persistent digital environments are becoming essential for maintaining operational readiness.
Built on a Digital Twin of Space
The MENTAT platform is built upon Slingshot Aerospace's Digital Space Twin, which integrates live orbital information, astrodynamic modeling, AI-driven analytics, and mission context into a unified simulation environment.
By closely replicating real orbital conditions, operators can rehearse missions against scenarios that better reflect today's increasingly congested and contested space domain.
The system also supports Slingshot Aerospace's broader Space Operations Intelligence & Autonomy (SOIA) framework, which follows a continuous operational cycle of:
Sense → Fuse → Decide → Act
This architecture combines space domain awareness, AI analytics, threat modeling, simulation, and mission rehearsal into an integrated operational workflow designed to improve decision-making across government space missions.
Strengthening Space Force Readiness Through AI
Commenting on the award, Tim Solms, CEO of Slingshot Aerospace, emphasized the growing importance of realistic AI-enabled mission preparation as space becomes an increasingly strategic military domain.
According to Solms, TALOS allows Guardians to train against realistic orbital scenarios while rehearsing complex missions with unprecedented speed, scalability, and accessibility, helping bring advanced operational readiness directly into day-to-day mission environments.
With governments around the world accelerating investments in military space capabilities and artificial intelligence, programs such as MENTAT demonstrate how digital simulation, AI, and operational analytics are becoming central components of future space defense strategies.
