Spanish space company FOSSA has raised €9.25 million in fresh funding to accelerate the deployment of its secure communications satellite constellation and advance new capabilities in defense and intelligence.

The funding round was led by Kibo Ventures and included participation from the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), Space Frontiers Fund II (with SPARX Asset Management Co., Ltd. as manager), Indico Capital Partners, and WISeSat. The investment marks a significant milestone in FOSSA's ambition to become one of Europe's leading providers of sovereign space infrastructure.

The company plans to use the new capital to expand its international footprint, strengthen its workforce, accelerate commercial growth initiatives launched in 2024, and continue building its planned constellation of 140 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Building Europe's Next Sovereign Space Infrastructure Player

Founded in 2020, FOSSA has quickly emerged as one of Europe's most active space and defense technology companies. The company has already launched more than 25 satellites, making it the Spanish company with the largest number of satellites deployed into orbit.

Its next mission, scheduled for the coming weeks, will place its 26th satellite into orbit, further expanding a constellation designed to deliver secure and reliable connectivity to remote and underserved regions worldwide.

Today, FOSSA employs approximately 60 people across Spain and Portugal and is entering a new phase of operational and technological scaling.

The company develops proprietary technologies spanning:

  • Satellite IoT connectivity

  • Secure communications systems

  • Space-based signals intelligence (SIGINT)

  • Sovereign satellite infrastructure

Its solutions support applications across energy, logistics, agriculture, critical infrastructure, and national security sectors.

Democratizing Access to Space Capabilities

FOSSA has built the capability to design and manufacture satellite constellations ranging from 10 kilograms to more than 150 kilograms, while also operating its own IoT network that provides global connectivity and strategic capabilities in areas without terrestrial communications coverage.

"Thanks to FOSSA, small nations, Ministries of Defence, and global corporations can define and execute their own space strategy in just a few months," said Julián Fernández, CEO and co-founder of FOSSA.

"The vertical integration of our technology stack has allowed us to reduce costs by an order of magnitude. In just a few years, we have gone from being a startup to an internationally present company with 25 satellites launched and technologies that address real industrial, institutional, and governmental needs. Our objective is to establish FOSSA as a European benchmark in sovereign space infrastructure."

Fernández added that the latest funding round validates the company's long-term vision, execution capabilities, and growing international market presence.

Strategic Timing Amid Growing Demand for Space Sovereignty

The investment comes as governments and industries increasingly view space as a critical strategic domain.

Secure satellite communications, Earth observation, signals intelligence, and resilient space infrastructure have become essential capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions and growing concerns over technological dependence.

"Europe needs technological champions capable of reducing dependencies in strategic sectors," said Juan López Santamaría, Partner at Kibo Ventures.

"FOSSA has demonstrated that it can develop and operate sovereign space infrastructure with exceptional speed and efficiency."

As part of the investment, Kibo Ventures will join FOSSA's board of directors.

Expanding Defense and Intelligence Capabilities

FOSSA has significantly strengthened its position in the defense and security sector, including its participation in NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program.

The company was selected for its expertise in electromagnetic intelligence (ELINT) from low Earth orbit and its development of dual-use technologies that serve both commercial and defense applications.

At the same time, FOSSA continues to accelerate its international expansion strategy. The company recently opened its third office in Tokyo, complementing its operations in Madrid and Lisbon, and signed a strategic agreement with Kanematsu Corporation to bring its technologies into the Japanese defense market.

Entering a New Growth Phase

The latest financing brings FOSSA's total capital raised since its inception to nearly €20 million.

The company now enters a new growth phase focused on:

  • Scaling its 140-satellite constellation

  • Accelerating international expansion

  • Developing advanced secure communications systems

  • Expanding space-based intelligence capabilities

As Europe increasingly prioritizes sovereign space capabilities and strategic autonomy, FOSSA is positioning itself at the intersection of commercial connectivity, defense innovation, and next-generation space infrastructure.

With this latest investment, the company further strengthens its standing as one of Europe's emerging leaders in satellite communications, low Earth orbit intelligence, and sovereign space systems designed to connect, monitor, and protect critical assets worldwide.
