Canadian mission-critical solutions provider Calian Group Ltd. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Galaxy Broadband Communications, a move that significantly expands its communications and connectivity capabilities across Canada's government, defence, critical infrastructure, and remote community sectors.

The acquisition marks another strategic step in Calian's ongoing effort to build a comprehensive portfolio of mission-critical technologies serving some of the country's most demanding operating environments.

Under the terms of the agreement, Calian will acquire Galaxy Broadband for an upfront consideration of CAD $24 million, with an additional earnout of up to CAD $27.5 million tied to performance over the next three years. The transaction is expected to close during Calian's fourth fiscal quarter, subject to customary regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

A Strategic Expansion into Remote Connectivity

Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, Galaxy Broadband has spent more than three decades delivering secure and resilient communications solutions to customers operating in some of Canada's most challenging and isolated regions, including Northern Canada.

The company has built a strong reputation in:

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite deployment

  • Multi-orbit satellite communications

  • Private wireless networks

  • Connectivity solutions for government and defence agencies

  • Communications services for critical infrastructure operators and remote communities

As demand for resilient communications infrastructure continues to rise, particularly in remote and strategically important regions, the acquisition provides Calian with enhanced capabilities to support defence operations, public safety initiatives, digital infrastructure projects, and essential services across Canada.

Building a Stronger Communications Portfolio

Patrick Houston, Chief Executive Officer of Calian, described Galaxy Broadband as a highly strategic addition to the company's communications and connectivity business.

According to Houston, Galaxy's expertise in satellite communications and multi-orbit connectivity complements Calian's existing strengths and enhances its ability to support customers operating in complex and remote environments.

The transaction is also expected to deepen Calian's relationships with federal and territorial governments, critical infrastructure operators, and organizations serving Northern Canada, while strengthening its offerings across communications infrastructure, cybersecurity, defence technologies, and remote service delivery.

Supporting Canada's Northern and Remote Communities

For Galaxy Broadband, the transaction represents an opportunity to scale its mission of delivering reliable connectivity to underserved regions.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Rick Hodgkinson emphasized that both companies share a common commitment to customer success, mission-critical operations, and supporting communities that depend on secure and resilient communications.

The combination of the two organizations is expected to create a stronger platform for delivering next-generation communications services across Canada's remote and northern regions, where connectivity is increasingly viewed as a strategic necessity rather than simply a convenience.

Growing Importance of Multi-Orbit Connectivity

The acquisition also highlights a broader industry trend: governments and critical infrastructure operators are increasingly turning to multi-orbit satellite architectures that combine LEO, medium Earth orbit (MEO), and geostationary (GEO) systems to deliver more resilient, secure, and flexible communications networks.

By integrating Galaxy Broadband's expertise into its portfolio, Calian is positioning itself to play a larger role in Canada's evolving communications landscape, particularly in sectors where reliable connectivity is essential to national security, economic development, and community resilience.

Once completed, the acquisition is expected to significantly enhance Calian's ability to deliver integrated, mission-critical communications solutions to customers operating across some of the most remote and strategically important regions in the country.
