Antares Secures $470 Million to Accelerate Nuclear Microreactors for U.S. Defense and Space Missions

Antares has secured $470 million in Series C funding, marking one of the largest recent investments in advanced nuclear technology as the company moves from reactor demonstration to commercial deployment. The funding will accelerate the rollout of factory-built nuclear microreactors designed to provide resilient, long-duration power for U.S. military installations and future space applications.
The financing round was co-led by Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital, with participation from Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital, Industrious Ventures, and several other investors. The package includes $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt, providing the capital needed to transition Antares from successful reactor testing to operational deployments beginning in 2028.
A Major Milestone for Advanced Nuclear Technology
The investment follows a significant technical achievement for the company. Just weeks before announcing the funding, Antares successfully brought its Mark-0 microreactor to criticality at Idaho National Laboratory, making it the first privately developed non-light-water reactor in the United States to reach criticality in more than 40 years.
According to the company, the milestone validated key reactor systems, including reactor physics, reactivity control, instrumentation, and the performance of its TRISO-fueled full-scale reactor core. Achieving this objective on schedule reinforces Antares' strategy of prioritizing engineering execution over ambitious timelines.
Paradigm Managing Partner Alana Palmedo described the achievement as the beginning of a new phase for the company, highlighting Antares' transition from proving the technology to deploying reliable, safe, and economically viable microreactors across U.S. military bases.
Powering Critical Infrastructure
Unlike conventional energy systems, Antares' nuclear microreactors are engineered to operate autonomously for more than six years without refueling, delivering continuous electricity in environments where grid reliability is essential.
The company believes this capability addresses an increasingly critical challenge for national security. Many U.S. military installations continue to rely on aging commercial power grids that face mounting pressure from growing electricity demand, severe weather events, and potential cyber or physical attacks.
By providing independent, resilient power generation, microreactors could significantly strengthen energy security for critical defense infrastructure.
Commercial Deployment Begins
Antares plans to move rapidly from demonstration to deployment.
The company's roadmap includes commissioning its Mark-1 electricity-producing reactor in 2027, followed by the first operational deployments at U.S. defense installations in 2028. Initial customers include the U.S. Air Force through the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative.
CEO and Co-founder Jordan Bramble said the company has shifted its focus from winning the race to reactor criticality toward winning the race to commercialization. He emphasized that Antares already has firm contracts in place and intends to use the new capital to scale manufacturing alongside government investment while maintaining its focus on delivering reactors capable of safe, reliable operation for military customers.
Supporting U.S. Energy Security Objectives
The company's deployment timeline also aligns with Executive Order 14299, which directs the U.S. Department of Defense to begin operating an advanced nuclear reactor at a domestic military installation by September 30, 2028.
As governments increasingly prioritize energy resilience for defense infrastructure, advanced nuclear technologies are gaining momentum as a strategic capability. For Antares, the latest funding provides the financial backing needed to transform a proven reactor design into commercially deployed power systems capable of supporting defense missions where uninterrupted electricity is mission-critical.
With a successful reactor demonstration completed, committed defense customers, and nearly half a billion dollars in fresh capital, Antares is positioning itself as one of the leading companies driving the commercialization of advanced nuclear microreactors for national security and future space applications.
