As demand for resilient satellite communications and sovereign space infrastructure continues to accelerate, SSC Space is strengthening its global ground station footprint through a new strategic partnership with Finnish ground station operator NorthBase.

The collaboration will integrate NorthBase’s Muonio ground station site in Finnish Lapland into SSC Space’s expanding global network, enhancing coverage, operational flexibility, and capacity for satellite missions worldwide.

Located at 68° North in Muonio, Finland, the site offers valuable high-latitude coverage for Earth observation, communications, defense, and scientific satellite operations. The partnership represents another significant step in the growing Nordic space ecosystem, where regional cooperation is increasingly tied to both commercial growth and strategic security priorities.

SSC Space, globally recognized for its capabilities in ground segment services, mission operations, science missions, and launch support, said the agreement aligns with its broader strategy of scaling its infrastructure through international partnerships.

According to Carl-Johan Linér, Interim President of Business Area Connect at SSC Space, the collaboration strengthens the company’s ability to provide enhanced coverage and additional network capacity to customers around the world while reinforcing Nordic cooperation in the evolving security landscape.

The agreement comes at a time when satellite operators are seeking more resilient and geographically diverse ground infrastructure to support rising mission volumes, low Earth orbit constellations, and defense-oriented space applications.

By incorporating Muonio into its global network, SSC Space will also provide customers with expanded opportunities for antenna hosting and access to additional operational capacity in the Nordic region.

For NorthBase, the partnership significantly expands the international reach of its infrastructure.

Dr. Tech. Tommi Rasila, Founder and CEO of NorthBase, emphasized that integrating with SSC Space’s established global network creates new opportunities to support satellite missions with improved operational flexibility and broader regional and international coverage.

The partnership reflects a broader trend across the global space sector: the growing importance of distributed, scalable, and secure ground segment infrastructure as governments, commercial operators, and defense stakeholders increase investments in space-based capabilities.

With geopolitical tensions driving renewed focus on resilience and sovereign space access, Nordic collaboration in the ground segment domain is rapidly becoming strategically important, not only for commercial satellite services, but also for future defense and security architectures.

The integration of the Muonio ground station marks another milestone in Europe’s efforts to strengthen regional space infrastructure while supporting the rapidly expanding global satellite economy.
