In a move that strengthens Europe’s position in the global space economy, OHB Sweden, a leading member of the German OHB SE Group, has been awarded a significant contract by SWISSto12, one of the world’s fastest-growing aerospace and RF technology companies. Under this agreement, OHB Sweden will supply six advanced electric propulsion (EP) systems for the pioneering HummingSat platform, the first commercial SmallSat designed for geostationary orbit (GEO).

The partnership marks a major milestone for Europe’s ambition to build resilient, sovereign, and globally competitive satellite infrastructure. HummingSat represents a new class of agile, cost-efficient GEO spacecraft tailored for rapidly evolving telecommunications markets. As operators increasingly shift from traditional broadcast to broadband connectivity, the platform’s lower production and launch costs are reshaping expectations for GEO missions.

OHB Sweden’s EP systems will provide the precise maneuvering, station-keeping, orbital repositioning, and mission-lifetime extension required for next-generation GEO constellations. This capability is central to SWISSto12’s strategy to offer flexible, scalable solutions to commercial operators and government customers.

Strengthening Europe’s Industrial Momentum

“This contract is a milestone for us because it confirms our capabilities in the electric propulsion area and further develops our industrialization efforts,” said Fredrik Sjöberg, Deputy Managing Director of OHB Sweden. “Our commitment is to deliver a full sub-system every second month starting mid-2026. This is exactly the type of project for which our new facility has been conceived.”

For OHB Sweden, the contract underscores its growing role in supplying propulsion technologies that enable efficient and sustainable GEO operations, an area of increasing strategic importance as Europe invests in sovereign satellite capabilities.

A Transformative Moment for the GEO Market

Emphasizing the program’s impact on Europe’s broader space ecosystem, Emile de Rijk, CEO of SWISSto12, highlighted the multinational nature of the initiative: “This program exemplifies European-wide collaboration across Sweden, Switzerland, and Germany, reinforcing European space and satellite sovereignty. HummingSat is the world’s first commercial SmallSat for GEO. Its high performance combined with lower cost of build and launch will transform the GEO market, enabling telecom operators and nation states to adopt new agile satellite solutions that will better connect the world.”

As global demand for secure, high-capacity connectivity accelerates, HummingSat stands out as a disruptive solution fusing GEO reliability with SmallSat economics. The OHB Sweden–SWISSto12 partnership positions Europe to compete in emerging commercial and government segments requiring flexible, cost-efficient orbital assets.
