IonQ Acquires Skyloom to Build Space-Based Quantum Network Infrastructure

IonQ is taking a decisive step toward shaping the future of secure global communications with its plan to acquire Skyloom Global, a leader in space-based optical communication systems. The move deepens IonQ’s reach across quantum computing, networking, and sensing, while positioning the company as a powerful integrator of terrestrial and orbital quantum technologies.
This acquisition is more than a strategic expansion; it is a clear statement of IonQ’s intent to build the world’s first end-to-end quantum-secure communications ecosystem. Skyloom, known for its high-capacity optical inter-satellite links, often described as “fiberless internet for Earth,” brings an advanced space-grade communications infrastructure that complements IonQ’s rapidly growing quantum portfolio.
The deal follows a series of targeted acquisitions throughout 2024 and 2025, including Qubitekk, ID Quantique, Capella Space, and Vector Atomic, each reinforcing IonQ’s ambition to deliver a full-stack quantum platform spanning hardware, software, sensing, and global networking capabilities.
Backed by $3.5 billion in new funding, IonQ is accelerating the development of fault-tolerant quantum systems and secure communications architecture at a planetary scale. By integrating Skyloom’s optical terminals with IonQ’s quantum processing and networking technologies, the company aims to establish a global quantum key distribution (QKD) framework linking ground stations, satellites, and orbital networks.
This combined capability opens the door to real-time quantum data transport, resilient space-based entanglement distribution, and infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation defense, intelligence, and commercial communications.
“IonQ, Skyloom, our Capella business, and ID Quantique are together building a platform for quantum key distribution, not just on the ground, but also into space with satellites,” said IonQ CEO Niccolò de Masi. His statement reflects a broader industry shift: the convergence of quantum science and aerospace technology as the backbone of future national-security-grade communications.
As governments and enterprises seek quantum-resistant networks, IonQ’s expanded satellite-enabled architecture positions the company to influence the next era of secure global connectivity.
